The success of a professional is intricately determined by the quality of their competencies. Therefore, comprehending the profile of a particular professional requires a deep understanding of the vital competencies for executing their roles. In the realm of higher education, where professor’s responsibilities span across research, teaching, and guidance, they are expected to possess a wide range of competencies. In this context, the main objective of this study was to identify the competency profile of professors within the higher education domain. To achieve this, a qualitative research approach was conducted using bibliographic sources for data collection. The findings facilitated the categorization of essential competencies among higher education instructors into three distinct domains: i) mastery of the scientific content to be imparted; ii) proficiency in teaching and learning processes (didactics); and iii) management-related aptitudes. Each of these domains necessitates specific technical expertise and behavioral acumen from educators. Notably, didactics received heightened attention in the bibliographic discourse owing to the paramount importance of teaching methodologies within the realm of higher education.
